Shepherds in the Field
According to Dr. Luke, Jesus was born and laid in a manger. The angel of the Lord came to the shepherds to tell them the Good News of Jesus’s birth.
Luke 2:8, And there were shepherds in the same country abiding in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock.
The shepherds lived out of the city.
The shepherds were not influential people.
God can still use people of less influence for His glory.
God uses ordinary people to take on extraordinary work.
God can use you, whatever your capability.
The shepherds’ witness was not accepted in the court.
People did not like them.
They were watching over their sheep.
They were awake.
They were busy.
God is not interested in lazy people.
No multinational company is interested in lazy people.
Then WHY should the people of God be lazy?
Are you lazy?
Are you active for the Lord?
Luke 2:9, And an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
The angel did not go to the palace.
Angel did not go to the scholars.
Angel went to the shepherds.
God is looking for ordinary people.
The shepherds saw the glory of God.
Have you ever seen the glory of God?
They were afraid.
They were human beings.
Luke 2:10, And the angel said unto them, Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all the people:
That was a message of comfort and consolation.
Do not be afraid.
Are you courageous or cowardly?
Are you weak?
I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all the people:
It is for the individual.
It is a personal message of Good News.
It is universal Good News.
Luke 2:11, for there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.
The Saviour is born.
Jesus means “he will save his people from their sins”
The Anointed One.
He is King.
He is High Priest.
He is Lord.
Luke 2:12, And this is the sign unto you: Ye shall find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, and lying in a manger.
The perfect humanity of Jesus.
He became poor for us.
He came into a very low place for our sake.
So that everybody could see Him.
…though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty
might become rich (2 Corinthians 8:9).
He wants us to be rich in love.
He wants us to be rich in compassion.
He wants us to be rich in holy living.
He wants us to be rich in good work.
He wants us to be rich in faith.
He wants us to be rich in giving.
He wants us to be rich in forgiving others.
He wants us to be rich in caring for others.
He wants us to be rich in mercy.
He wants us to be rich in grace
He wants us to be rich in joy.
He wants us to be rich in peace.
He wants us to be rich in humility.
He wants us to be rich in kindness.
He wants us to be rich in goodness.
He wants us to be rich in honesty.
Luke 2:13, And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Angels at all times praise God in heaven.
The saints who are now in glory also always praise God.
The believers who are alive and are on this earth also praise God.
God created man to worship and praise Him.
Do you worship and praise HIM?
Luke 2:14, Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men in whom he is well pleased.
This is the message of peace.
Jesus brings peace to fallen man.
Jesus is Peace.
He gives His peace.
Through His blood He made peace on the Cross.
He wants this peace to be promoted.
This peace is free.
This peace is in abundance.
This peace is more than enough for all our trials, hardships, unrest and worries.
This peace comes from above.
This peace is for everybody.
This peace is for every color and creed.
Have you experienced this peace?
Do you have this peace?
Do you share this peace with others?
Luke 2:15, And it came to pass, when the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing that is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
The shepherds had open discussion.
The shepherds had unity.
The shepherds agreed to go to Bethlehem.
The shepherds were obedient to the message of the angel.
The shepherds were open, transparent
The shepherds were receptive.
The shepherds did not waste their time.
The shepherds were good stewards and managers of their time.
The shepherds believed what the angel told them.
Luke 2:16, And they came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in the manger.
The shepherds were quick to respond.
God guided them.
Their search was fruitful.
Luke 2:17, And when they saw it, they made known concerning the saying which was spoken to them about this child.
They were strong witness.
They strongly promoted the good news of Jesus’s birth.
Luke 2:18 And all that heard it wondered at the things which were spoken unto them by the shepherds.
The shepherds told the true and exact story.
The Good News (the gospel; the birth, death, forgiveness of sins, and the bodily resurrection of Jesus) has a great and strong impact on those who hear it.
God is not looking for great orators,
He is looking for humble people.
He is looking for faithful people.
Luke 2:19, But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart.
Mary was a thoughtful person.
Mary was recalling what God had spoken to her through the angel Gabriel.
Mary is meditating on the goodness of God.
Mary is concentrating on the faithfulness of God.
Luke 2:20, And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, even as it was spoken unto them.
The shepherds are praising God.
The shepherds went back to their business.
May our Lord help us to do the things which are acceptable and well pleasing unto HIM!
