Chapter 1

  • by Samuel Gill

Jonah, his disobedience, cost  and God’s love.

Jon 1:1Now the word of Jehovah came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, (ASV)

Jonah

  • Jonah is mentioned in 2 Kings 14:25. He prophesied in the reign of

Jeroboam II.   He was the king of Israel from 753 – 793 BC.

  • It is possible that Jonah was a member of the group of the ‘sons of the prophets’ which are mentioned in connection with the ministry of Elisha (2Kings 2:3).

The author.

  • The author of this book is Jonah.

The meanings.

  • The meanings of his name is “Dove”

Nineveh

  • God told Jonah to go to Nineveh and preach the ‘word’ (the message God gave him): Jonah 1:2.
  • Nineveh was a very important city of Assyria (located in present day Iraq).
  • In the days of Jonah it was emerging as a world power. In the next fifty years it was going to be the capital of the great empire of Assyria.

Nineveh’s wickedness

  • Jonah does not talk much about the wickedness and evil of the people of Nineveh but the prophet Nahum (who prophesied later than Jonah) talks a lot about it.
  • Nahum tells us that:

            (a)   Nineveh was guilty of being against the plans of God (Nahum 1:9).

(b)   Nineveh had tyrannized God’s people and destroyed their crops (Nahum 2:2). (This was after the time of Jonah.)

(c)   Nineveh was guilty of idolatry, prostitution, witchcraft, sorcery and evil deeds (Nahum 3:4).

Jonah’s commission

  • God told Jonah to go to Nineveh which was situated 500 miles Northeast of Israel (Jonah 1:2).
  • He should inform people about the judgment of God (Jonah 3:4).

Jonah is a prophet.

  • God delivered his message or ‘word’ to Jonah: he spoke directly to him.
  • Jonah is a prophet (a spokesman for God).
  • There were two types of prophets in the Old Testament times (Deuteronomy 13:1-11; 18:14-22):

(a).  The true prophet. He said, ‘Thus says the Lord.’ Whatever he said, it truly came to pass (1 Samuel 3:19).

(b).  The false prophet. He prophesied in the name of God: ‘God says so.’ But it never came to pass. He tried to please people. He was a ‘man pleaser.’ He says, ‘Peace, peace’, but there is no peace (Jeremiah 23:9-22).

Jon 1:2  Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

The call of God to the prophet

  • In order to serve God it is very essential to have a call. (Sometimes this is a fake call. If God calls a person, then another person also says, ‘God has called me too.’ How can we tell which is genuine? See Acts 13:1-3)
  • Paul’s call to preach (Acts 26:12-18); he was not disobedient (Acts 26:19-20).
  • Other kinds of call from God: to suffer (Acts 9:15-16), to be holy (1 Pet. 1:15-16), to receive a heavenly prize (Phil. 3:13-14), to be faithful to death (Rev. 2:10),

 ‘Arise’

  • A command of God.
  • ‘Arise. Come in your senses.’ (Luke 15:17-20)
  • ‘Arise I will give you a task to do.’ (Acts 9:6)
  • ‘Go to the great city, Nineveh.’

 ‘Great city’

  • Like: Karachi, Tokyo, Beijing, London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles.
  • Life in a great city.
  • Sins in the great cities: crimes, murder, drugs, terrorism, rape, kidnapping, asking for ransom.

 ‘Nineveh’

  • It took three days to go around the city.
  • There was a great wall built around it.
  • It was situated in what is today called Iraq.

 ‘Preach against it’

  • Make an announcement.
  • Preach against that which is wrong.
  • Do not alter the message.  (2 Cor. 4:2)
  • How do we preach as preachers? (Do we please people? Do we please God? Do we preach for our gain? Do we preach in such a way that nobody will oppose us? Do we preach in such as way that everybody should like us? When we will preach against sin then nobody will like us.
  • God sends Jonah to the Gentiles (not God’s people, a different race).

‘For their wickedness is come up before me’

  • When people pray it reaches in the presence of God. God is pleased with the prayers of his people.
  • When people are wicked, their wickedness reaches God, and he is angry with those people (Rom. 1:18).
  • God can never overlook the sin (Hab. 1:12-13) but he loves the sinner (John 3:16).

Jon 1:3  But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of Jehovah; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of Jehovah.

Jonah flees to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

  • He is a prophet. What is the task of a prophet?  To speak on God’s behalf.
  • He is prophet of God. He is a disobedient prophet.
  • God sent him to the Gentiles to preach the word (message).
  • He had hatred in his heart for the Gentiles. He did not have love for them in his heart. He had no love for their salvation. He wanted to see them destroyed.
  • He wanted to live in the comfort zone.
  • He ran from the presence of God. He forgot that God is present everywhere. Omnipresent.
  • He forgot that God knows everything. Omniscient. He forgot that God sees every thing.
  • He thought that when he was outside the boundary of Israel then God will not be able to follow him. The presence of God is only in the Israel.
  • ‘Oh God where I can run from your presence?’ (Psalm 139: 7)
  • “A person should commit sins, where there is no God”.

‘So he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it.’

  • He purchased his destruction by paying the money.
  • In our present age people pay money and buy their own destruction.
  • They purchase drugs, adultery, murder, alcoholism, sorcery, all kinds of addictions and bad habits.

Jon 1:4  But Jehovah sent out a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

  • The Power of God.
  • The sovereignty of God. God can do whatever he wants.

“Is anything too hard for Jehovah?”  (Gen 18:14)

“Ah Lord Jehovah! behold, thou hast made the heavens and the earth by thy great

power and by thine outstretched arm; there is nothing too hard for thee,”

             (Jer 32:17)

  • God is all sufficient.
  • “And my God shall supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Php 4:19)
  • God does not need the counsel of any person.
  • God does not need the permission of any individual.
  • Do we dictate to God?

The prophet disobeyed God.

  • The great wind obeyed God.
  • The sea obeyed God.
  • The tempest, the storm obeyed God.
  • But the prophet did not learn from the nature wind, sea, tempest and storm that he should obey.
  • How many times do I and you obey God?
  • How do I and you obey God? Joyfully? Half heartedly? With murmuring? Not willingly?
  • May Lord help us to obey Him unconditionally.

Jon 1:5  Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god; and they cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it unto them. But Jonah was gone down into the innermost parts of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

‘Then the mariners were afraid.’

  • Human anxiety. Fear can be either a good or bad thing.
  • Jonah committed the sin but others were suffering due to him.

‘Every body cried to his god.’

  • Man calls to a greater power.
  • That god may be false or it may be true.

‘And they cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea.’

  • Owing to this great storm the lives of the people in the ship were in great danger.

  •  If  some of the wares were food  then the God provided food for the creatures in the sea.

Jonah was fast asleep.

  • Maybe Jonah reached the ship very tired because he was preaching in big healing crusades and doing a lot of evangelistic work!
  • More preaching can mean more tiredness.
  • Maybe because he ran from the presence of God. He wanted to get into the ship as fast as possible. That really made him tired.
  • He was at peace now. He was sleeping. He was in deep sleep. May be he was snoring.
  • He may have thought ‘Now God can do nothing unto me. If God wanted to do something, he could have done on the way.’
  • Now he   was in the condition of perfect peace and relaxation.  No Tension. No more preaching assignments. No more travel to other village or place.  Now he was totally free from all his worries, tensions and stresses.
  • The conscience of Jonah did not bother him. If our conscience does not bother us, this does not prove that we are doing the right things.
  • We can not measure our obedience by our feelings.
  • It is essential that we measure obedience through the norm of the God’s Word.

Jon 1:6  So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.

So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper?

  • Jonah is unaware of all that is happening in his situation and circumstances.
  • Spiritual unconsciousness.
  • Samson was unaware that God had left him. (Judges 16:20)

Arise, call upon thy God,

  • Almost everybody believes in some deity.
  • That deity can be true or false.

The world has so many gods (Psalm 115:2, 4-8): think, for example, of Hindu temples in Sindh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, etc.

“Wherefore should the nations say, Where is now their God?”  (Psa 115:2)

“Their idols are silver and gold, The work of men's hands.   They have mouths, but they speak not; Eyes have they, but they see not;   They have ears, but they hear not; Noses have they, but they smell not;   They have hands, but they handle not; Feet have they, but they walk not; Neither speak they through their throat.   They that make them shall be like unto them; Yea, every one that trusteth in them.” (Psa 115:4-8)

God (the God of the Bible) is the only true God.

“Ye are my witnesses, saith Jehovah, and my servant whom I have chosen; that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.   I, even I, am Jehovah; and besides me there is no saviour.” (Isa 43:10-11)

“For thus saith Jehovah that created the heavens, the God that formed the earth and made it, that established it and created it not a waste, that formed it to be inhabited: I am Jehovah; and there is none else.  I have not spoken in secret, in a place of the land of darkness; I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I, Jehovah, speak righteousness, I declare things that are right.  Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, ye that are escaped of the nations: they have no knowledge that carry the wood of their graven image, and pray unto a god that cannot save.  Declare ye, and bring it forth; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath showed this from ancient time? who hath declared it of old? have not I, Jehovah? and there is no God else besides me, a just God and a Saviour; there is none besides me. Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is none else.  By myself have I sworn, the word is gone forth from my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, that unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.” (Isa 45:18-23)

“For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or on earth; as there are gods many, and lords many; yet to us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we unto him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we through him.” (1Co 8:5-6)

if so be that God will think upon us,

  • The sailors think that the god of Jonah may protect them.

that we perish not.

  • Life is precious.
  • Death is certain.

“For, All flesh is as grass, And all the glory thereof as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower falleth:” (1Pe 1:24)

“whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. What is your life? For ye are a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” (Jas 4:14)

  • Life is uncertain.

“And inasmuch as it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this cometh judgment;”  (Heb 9:27)

Jon 1:7  And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that

we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us.

  • The sailors were greatly afraid. Do we fear God? Do we honour God?

“Oh fear Jehovah, ye his saints; For there is no want to them that fear him.” (Psa 34:9)

  • The sailors were superstitious. Jonah became the source of fear for the sailors.

So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

  • God controlled that lot and it indicated Jonah.

“The lot is cast into the lap; But the whole disposing thereof is of Jehovah.” (Pro 16:33)

  • God showed Jonah that Jonah could not run away from his presence. Do we live in the presence of the living and loving God? Do we enjoy the presence of living and loving God? Do we run from the presence of the living and loving God?

“Whither shall I go from thy Spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, thou art there.  If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;

Even there shall thy hand lead me, And thy right hand shall hold me.  If I say, Surely the darkness shall overwhelm me, And the light about me shall be night;  Even the darkness hideth not from thee, But the night shineth as the day: The darkness and the light are both alike to thee.”    (Psa 139:7-12)

  • God showed the sin of Jonah: that he was disobedient. When God shows our sins, how do we react? Do we accept, confess and ask God to restore us?

“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.   If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.    If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”(1Jn 1:8-10)

  • Do we rebel and stand against God?

Jon 1:8  Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; what is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?

What is thine occupation?

  • A holy profession.

“And all Israel from Dan even to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of Jehovah.”  (1Sa 3:20)

“Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was a herdsman, and a dresser of sycomore-trees:  and Jehovah took me from following the flock, and Jehovah said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.” (Amo 7:14-15)

“And he gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;” (Eph 4:11)

“according as each hath received a gift, ministering it among yourselves, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God;  if any man speaketh, speaking as it were oracles of God; if any man ministereth, ministering as of the strength which God supplieth: that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, whose is the glory and the dominion for ever and ever. Amen.” (1Pe 4:10-11)

“that ye should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and the commandments of the Lord and Saviour through your apostles:” (2Pe 3:2)

Of what people art thou?

  • Israel was a nation chosen by God. (Ex. 19:5-6)
  • Now God has chosen all Gentile nations through Christ to be his nation, his special people: “But ye are an elect race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that ye may show forth the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his  marvelous light:” (1Pe 2:9)
  • Now we are chosen by God to manifest his qualities and characteristics. How do we show the beauties of Christ in and through our life, family and ministry?

Jon 1:9  And he said unto them, I am a Hebrew; and I fear Jehovah, the God of heaven, who hath made the sea and the dry land.

And he said unto them, I am a Hebrew;

  • Jonah is giving his testimony.

“but sanctify in your hearts Christ as Lord: being ready always to give answer to every man that asketh you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, yet with meekness and fear:” (1Pe 3:15)

  • He talks about his nation. (He uses the word ‘Hebrew’ that other peoples used of Israelites –

“that she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in a Hebrew unto us to mock us: he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:”    (Gen 39:14)

“And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, whom thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me:” (Gen 39:17)

“And she opened it, and saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews' children.” (Exo 2:6)

“And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of Jehovah was come into the camp.” (1Sa 4:6)

  • He is proud of his nation. Is that always good? Surely it is better to boast about what God has done for your nation!

“Jehovah did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all peoples: but because Jehovah loveth you, and because he would keep the oath which he sware unto your fathers, hath Jehovah brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.”(Deu 7:7-8)

“Behold, unto Jehovah thy God belongeth heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth, with all that is therein.  Only Jehovah had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed after them, even you above all peoples, as at this day.” (Deu 10:14-15)

“He showeth his word unto Jacob, His statutes and his ordinances unto Israel. He hath not dealt so with any nation; And as for his ordinances, they have not known them. Praise ye Jehovah.” (Psa 147:19-20)

and I fear Jehovah, the God of heaven, who hath made the sea and the

dry land.

  • Jonah says, ‘I am a person who lives in the fear of God.’ But this time he is disobedient to God.
  • How do you express the fear of God? You cannot say that you love God and at the same time run away from the presence of God.

“And now, Israel, what doth Jehovah thy God require of thee, but to fear Jehovah thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve Jehovah thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, to keep the commandments of Jehovah, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?” Deu 10:12-13)

  • If you want to experience more of God’s love and power then it is very essential that you fulfill those responsibilities which God has entrusted unto you.
  • You can not say that you believe in God and whatever God tells you but you do not obey him.

“And hereby we know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoso keepeth his word, in him verily hath the love of God been perfected. Hereby we know that we are in him:  he that saith he abideth in him ought himself also to walk even as he walked.”  (1Jn 2:3-6)

  • God is the creator of the whole universe. (Gen. 1:1-10)
  • Jehovah is the personal name of Israel’s God, the God who rescued them from slavery and made them his people.

“And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, what is his name? What shall I say unto them?  And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.  And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, Jehovah, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name forever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.”(Exo 3:13-15)

Jon 1:10  Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, What is this that thou hast done? For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Jehovah, because he had told them.

Then were the men exceedingly afraid,

  • They were frightened of the God of Jonah.
  • They knew that the God of Jonah has sent this great storm.
  • They were frightened that they would be killed.

and said unto him, What is this that thou hast done?

  • ‘You know God in a personal way, but what have you done?’
  • People can say to us that if we are servants of the true God, then why did we do this wrong thing?

“in all things showing thyself an ensample of good works; in thy doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of us. Exhort servants to be in subjection to their own masters, and to be well-pleasing to them in all things; not gainsaying;  not purloining, but showing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.” (Tit 2:7-10)

“For let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evil-doer, or as a meddler in other men's matters:” (1Pe 4:15)

For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Jehovah,

 because he had told them.

  • People very carefully watch us: the way we talk, sit, eat, look and dress up.
  • People know us more than what we know ourselves.
  • We are living in a glass room so people can see us from all sides.
  • The confession of Jonah.
  • A situational confession.
  • A partial confession.
  • A false confession.

“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven.” (Mat 7:21)

  • A true confession.

“And this is the message which we have heard from him and announce unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.  If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in the darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:   but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1Jn 1:5-9)

  • A true confession brings restoration.

“For godly sorrow worketh repentance unto salvation, a repentance which bringeth no regret: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.”  (2Co 7:10)

  • How do you confess?

Jon 1:11  Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea grew more and more tempestuous.

Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea

  may be calm unto us?

  • The mariners ask Jonah’s advice.
  • They do not make their own decision.
  • They do not want to harm Jonah.
  • They are willing to wait to let Jonah tell them the solution.
  • The mariners are looking for a solution.
  • They are sincere in looking for the solution.
  • They want that solution to come from Jonah’s side.
  • When people bring their problems to us, how do we respond?
  •  Are we sincere in solving their issues?
  • Do we ignore them?
  • Do we have a lack of interest in their lives as leaders?
  • When people come to us with their issues, we should not right away tell them the solution but help them clearly and impartially to think through their problems and find their own ways out.
  • Where they need our help we can graciously extend our help, advice and counsel.
  • We must be careful that they should not be always dependent on us.
  • We must help them to become matured spiritually and emotionally. We must build them up.
  • for the sea grew more and more tempestuous.
  • Due to the disobedience of a person (Jonah) God is showing his anger and wrath.
  • In the time of grace Jesus still forgives.
  • God showed his grace and mercy through Jesus.
  • Jesus was full of grace.

“And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father), full of grace and truth.” (Joh 1:14)

  • God is a judging God.
  • He is completely impartial.

Jon 1:12  And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.

And he said unto them, Take me up

  • Jonah told the mariners that he was at their disposal: “Whatever you think is good for you, do it to me.
  • Jonah was a brave person.

and cast me forth into the sea

  • Jonah had no fear of death. He accepted death by his own free will.
  • It is wise to die for a good cause. Jonah preferred death over life.
  • He suggested his own punishment.
  • Jonah was very concerned about the lives of the mariners but he did not bother about his own life or the life of the people of Nineveh.
  • He was calm and quite but when the lot came on his name he accepted it.
  • We cannot hide anything from God. (Psalm 139; 2)
  • Do we try to hide from God? Sin makes it hard to come close to God.
  • Are we comfortable in the presence of holy God?

so shall the sea be calm unto you:

  • Jonah told them the solution.
  • It is a direct solution.

for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you

  • Jonah knew that this Storm had come because of him.
  • His confession was true: he accepted his sin.
  • Is it easy to accept our sins and wrong doings?
  • It needs a great courage, honesty and transparency to accept our sins, wrongdoings and weaknesses. How do we accept our sins and wrong doings?
  • Jonah surrendered before God. Do we surrender before God? Are we stiff necked (hard hearted) before God?

Jon 1:13  Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not: for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.

Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not

  • Human efforts are in vain.  Man cannot stand against God.
  • Man in his full might is helpless before God.
  • These mariners had good intentions but God intervened.

for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them

  • The mariners wanted to save the life of Jonah.
  • At this moment God was angry and was not willing to save the life of Jonah.
  • Jonah had no love for the people of Nineveh that he should inform them about the wrath and judgment of God. Jonah did not want the lives of the people of Nineveh to be saved.
  • The gentile mariners had sympathy and compassion in their heart for Jonah.
  • Christians should feel ashamed when gentiles show more love and compassion compared to them.
  • God wants that we all should be concerned about others, for the sinners as well for the saved.

Jon 1:14  Wherefore they cried unto Jehovah, and said, We beseech thee, O Jehovah, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood; for thou, O Jehovah, hast done as it pleased thee.

  • The mariners cried before Jehovah, the God of Jonah. In the time of need how do we cry before God? Do we really cry to God in time of need?

The mariners washed their hands of the blood of Jonah. Do we kill other believers with the poison of our tongue?

“So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire!  And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell.  For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind.  But the tongue can no man tame; it is a restless evil, it is full of deadly poison.  Therewith bless we the Lord and Father; and therewith curse we men, who are made after the likeness of God:

out of the same mouth cometh forth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.  Doth the fountain send forth from the same opening sweet water and bitter?  Can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a vine figs? Neither can salt water yield sweet.” (Jas 3:5-12)

  • The mariners had some moral laws, although they were pagans. They were afraid of the God of Jonah. How do we fear from God?

“….. Fear Jehovah, and depart from evil:”(Pro 3:7b)

  • The mariners knew the sovereignty of God. They surrendered before the sovereignty of God. Do we really know, believe and surrender before God Almighty?

Jon 1:15  So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging.

  So they took up Jonah

  • Now Jonah could see all the angry waves that were impatiently waiting to swallow him.
  • What was the natural response and reaction of Jonah? What was he thinking? Human thoughts. Was he happy?
  • Did he know that he that he would survive the great storm?
  • When we disobey God and suffer, how do we respond?

and cast him forth into the sea

  • He was prepared to go into the sea instead of to Nineveh.
  • This was his last farewell or goodbye to the mariners. He must have thought that now he would never see life again.
  • When a believer runs away from God he prefers death rather than life. He prefers his own destruction.  It is a very sad and tragic picture.

and the sea ceased from its raging

  • This points to the divine power: (the sea ceased) God controls every thing.
  • Notice the consequences of disobedience: he is in the sea.
  • Due to the disobedience of Jonah, all the people in the ship were suffering.
  • When Jonah was thrown in the sea, the lives of all the mariners were saved.
  • Even one person in the family or Church can make the life of other people miserable.

  • Jon 1:16  Then the men feared Jehovah exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice unto Jehovah, and made vows.

  • The mariners showed their fear of God by offering sacrifices to God.

“The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge; but  the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.”  (Prov. 1:7)

‘The fear of Jehovah is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the perverse mouth, do I hate.” (Prov. 8:13)

‘The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of wisdom; and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” (Prov. 9:10)

  • How do you show respect, reverence and fear to the Lord?

  • Sometimes God can use our mistakes to help others so that they come to the saving knowledge of the Savior.

“And we know that to them that love God all things work together for good, even to them that are called according to his purpose.” (Rom. 8:28)

  • In his sovereignty God can bring ‘good out of evil.
  • Joseph’s brother did evil to him but God used this opportunity that through Joseph the lives of the rest of the family members could be saved.

“And as for you, ye meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.”  (Gen. 50:20)

  • All the circumstances can be painful but our confession can be a very strong example and witness to those who do not know the Lord.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”  (1 Jn. 1:9)

  • The mariners did the same as the nation of Israel was doing: they prayed to God, they offered sacrifices, they pledged themselves to worship and serve Him.

  • In the New Testament God wants us to give the sacrifice of our selves not of animals.

  • This sacrifice must be living.

“I protest by that glorifying in you, brethren, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.” (1 Cor. 15:31)

  • This sacrifice must be holy.

‘But like as he who called you is holy, be ye yourselves also holy in all manner of living; because it is written, ye shall be holy; for I am holy.’ (1 Pet. 1:15,16)

  • This sacrifice must be pleasing unto the Lord.

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service.”  (Rom. 12:1)

Jon 1:17  And Jehovah prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

And Jehovah prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah

A great fish

  • Is it possible to have such a great fish that would swallow human beings?

Some people doubt about it. Some people say that a great fish can

swallow a whole camel because there are many great fish in the sea.

  • In the mid fifties some of US Marines were having exercises in the sea of California. A  great fish attacked one of their companions and swallowed him. They were all the marines, so some of them fired on the great fish. They killed the fish, opened her belly and to their surprise their comrade was alive. After this, the Marine was told by the US Navy that he should take this great fish with him and visit the schools of the US and tell children that he was swallowed by this great fish and came out of her belly alive.   It proves that in reality there was a great fish which could have swallowed Jonah. Some think that it was a great whale.
  • For anyone who believes in the power of God and accepts the possibility of a miracle, it is unnecessary to try to demonstrate that there are great fish that can swallow a man. It says God prepared this fish, so it may have been a unique one, not any known species.

The Timing of God

  • God’s timing is always right.
  • God is never early in his timing nor late.
  • He is always in time.
  • God does all of his works in right time.
  • God delivered Jonah from the sea.
  • The grace of God is in action. The compassion and mercy of God is visible.
  • God’s plans are beyond human comprehension.
  • God provided the safety and security for Jonah.
  • Divine protection.
  • God cares for us, even when we are disobedient.
  • His unconditional love.

and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

  • Total darkness and death for Jonah. No human chances that he can see the light again.  It appears to be the end of Jonah’s earthly life.
  • Jesus uses this incident as a picture (sign) of the time he would be in the grave (earth) – three days and three nights.

“But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given it but the sign of Jonah the prophet:  for as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”(Mat 12:39-40)

  • So this verse foreshadows the death and burial of Jesus.

Definitely believe that which you stated. Your favorite reason seemed to be on the net the easiest thing to have in mind of. You controlled to hit the nail upon the top as well as outlined out the entire thing without having side-effects , people could take a signal. Will probably be back to get more. Thanks

But think of if you added some great photos or video clips to give your posts more, "pop"! Your content is excellent but with images and video clips, this site could definitely be one of the very best in its niche. Amazing blog!

Its like you read my thoughts! You appear to grasp a lot approximately this, such as you wrote the guide in it or something. I believe that you just can do with a few % to drive the message home a little bit, but instead of that, this is great blog. An excellent read. I'll certainly be back.

Hmm it looks like your site ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I'll just sum it up what I wrote and say, I'm thoroughly enjoying your blog. I as well am an aspiring blog blogger but I'm still new to the whole thing. Do you have any tips and hints for first-time blog writers? I'd definitely appreciate it.

Aw, this was an incredibly good post. Taking a few minutes and actual effort to create a very good article… but what can I say… I hesitate a whole lot and don't seem to get anything done.

What you posted made a ton of sense. However, what about this? what if you added a little content? I am not suggesting your content is not good, but what if you added something to possibly get a person's attention? I mean Chapter 1 - Hope in You is kinda vanilla. You should peek at Yahoo's home page and watch how they create post headlines to get people interested. You might add a related video or a related picture or two to grab readers interested about everything've got to say. In my opinion, it could bring your blog a little bit more interesting.
